Summer 2021 Internships

POSTER HOUSE SUMMER 2021 INTERNSHIP APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED.

THANK YOU TO ALL INTERESTED APPLICANTS! Please check the Jobs page regularly for future internship opportunities.

Poster House seeks qualified interns to assist with a variety of projects this summer at the museum.

Poster House is the first museum in the United States dedicated to the global history and design of posters. From early color lithographs of the late 1800s to today’s protest posters, Poster House presents exhibitions, educational programs, and public events that investigate the history and design of this ephemeral medium that speaks to broad audiences. The museum opened to the public in June 2019, and since that time has hosted shows on Alphonse Mucha, experimental digital designers Cyan, hand-painted movie posters from Ghana, the 2017 Women’s March, 100 years of Chinese posters, and mid-century Swiss design.

At this time, all Poster House internships for Summer 2021 will be virtual. The only exception will be the Collection Intern, who should be NYC-based as they will be onsite at the museum one day week as agreed upon with the Collections Manager and Director of Operations.

Schedule: These internships will run on a Monday to Thursday schedule (10am–5pm), Monday, June 7 to Thursday, August 12, 2021 for approx. 28 hours a week.

Pitch Your Own Graphic Design Internship

We want you to pitch us your dream graphic design internship. That’s right. We want you to tell us a project that you would like to design over a summer at Poster House with guidance from the Design and Exhibitions Department at Poster House. Applicants should conceive and pitch us their dream Design internship with the following in mind:

  • Must fit within the constraints of the internship program—the pitched internship must run on a Monday to Thursday schedule (10am–5pm), from Monday, June 7 to Thursday, August 12, with flexibility in scheduling for up to 28 hours a week.
  • Must be able to complete largely independently—we are here to support and guide your vision, but this is your opportunity to shine!
  • Must be realistic—we would love to put posters on Mars too but it’s not something we can do within the summer timeline.
  • Must be something beneficial and mission-driven for Poster House—you can read more about Poster House’s history and mission at posterhouse.org/about.

Those are our big asks! Now you tell us…what is it you’d like to do? When submitting your pitch, please consider and include the following information:

  • Skills, knowledge, and talents you are bringing to Poster House—what are you bringing to the table? Tell us what makes you a great fit for us.
  • Skills, knowledge, and talents you hope to learn at Poster House—Internships are first and foremost, a learning experience. What do you think this experience would allow you to learn at the museum?
  • A project you are hoping to do or implement during your internship—Dreaming of creating an amazing multilingual introduction to posters for our website? Thinking of designing a cool student membership tote bag? Tell us about any design projects you are dreaming of—we want to make sure your hard work happens!
  • Proposed timelines for your internship pitch—How long do you think it’ll take you to make your dreams a reality? Let us know!
  • Materials and resources you’d need access to—Need access to more than a computer? Let us know what you’d need to make your dream projects happen.

Our PYO Design Intern, if selected, will be required to develop an agenda for their internship and participate in weekly check-ins with the Education Programs Manager and Design Director and/or Designer.

We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, at this time, Poster House is unable to sponsor visas or host international interns without prior work authorization.

International Applicants

Poster House recommends that you consult with your school’s international student office and the U.S. embassy in your home country to determine which visa or work permits will allow you to participate in this internship. Please be aware that obtaining a visa is usually a lengthy process and can cost upwards of $1,500 USD; it must be completed well in advance of the internship start date.

Although Poster House functions as your host institution, Poster House does not sponsor visas for interns.

  • If you require a visa, you may be eligible to participate in the Exchange Visitor Program (J-1 visa program) by going through an outside agency that has been authorized by the State Department to sponsor a J-1 trainee visa. These sponsors are responsible for supporting and monitoring foreign nationals during their exchange programs in the United States.
  • In-school students should be eligible to obtain CURRICULAR PRACTICAL TRAINING (CPT)  which is work permission for in-school international students.
    • Prospective interns, contact your International student office for training and recommendations on how to obtain CPT. Obtaining CPT is your responsibility and not the responsibility of the Poster House team.
    • The position that prospective interns apply to should be related to your major(s).
    • Interns have to have an offer to apply for CPT so if you are hired by us, it is your responsibility to obtain CPT prior to your anticipated start date.
  • Recent college graduates or soon-to-be graduates must have Optional Practical Training (OPT) which allows recent grads to work for 12 months in the U.S.
    • Prospective interns, contact your International student office for training and recommendations on how to obtain OPT.
    • The position that prospective interns apply to should be related to your major.
    • Obtaining OPT is your responsibility. You can apply for OPT without an internship offer. The intern must have a valid OPT or they are sure that they will have a valid OPT by the time the internship starts.
  • International F-1 Students: You must have an existing Social Security Number or plan to live in the US this fall and can obtain a Social Security Number in order to apply for this position. If you do not have a Social Security Number and plan to live outside of the U.S. Fall 2021, you cannot apply for this position.

If an international student or recent graduate receives an invitation to interview for a role, Poster House will also request an estimated timeline for any needed work permit.
