Viennese Lettering: A Virtual Night With Paul Shaw

Thursday, Apr 8, 2021
6:30–8pm

Poster House is thrilled to partner once again with our favorite type historian, Paul Shaw, for an evening exploring lettering and the Vienna Secession.

From Koloman Moser and Alfred Roller to Lucian Bernhard and Ludwig Hohlwein to Peter Behrens and Otto Eckmann, lettering of this period was varied, innovative, and of a consistently high quality. It was an integral part of countless posters, advertising displays, and fine books, and in the 1960s and 1980s exerted an influence on American designers. Viennese lettering—through fonts such as Shaw’s Kolo—continues to fascinate and inspire designers today.

Paul Shaw is a designer and design historian with a specialty in letterforms and type. He is the author of Revival Type, Helvetica and the New York City Subway System; co-author of Blackletter and National Identity; and editor of The Eternal Letter. He teaches at Parsons School of Design and The School of Visual Arts.

This online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. Closed Captioning will be provided. Questions about access? Please email Salvador Muñoz, Public Programs Manager, at Salvador@posterhouse.org
